Judges Huon Hooke, James Halliday and Anna Pooley had their work cut out tasting more than 120 pinot noirs (and other styles) at the Tas Wine Show held in January. The 2006 Pinot Noir class prooved to be a highlight – ‘A lovely class and a joy to judge wines with a couple of years bottle age,’ said Huon Hooke. 2006 Pages Creek Pinot was one of the Gold medallists and it went on to win the Trophy for Best Value Pinot Noir, happily sponsored by Pinot Shop.
This charming wine shows exactly what 3+ years bottle age can do – all that Coal Valley dark-fruited earthiness dissolves into sumptuous silk, and for only $26. True to its award, it is one of the best value pinots that we’ve had the pleasure to sell.
2006 Pages Creek Pinot Noir $26
For white wine enthusiasts we still have some Show Packs available – Tasmanian Wine Show 2010 Trophy & Gold White Pack $320 (value $355)
Te Hera Pinots were among the most impressive tasted at Pinot Noir NZ 2010. They had some pretty stiff competition from the 100 featured wineries but the tremendous fruit focus of Te Hera’s wines demanded attention.
Winemaker/owner John Douglas was one of the first to establish a commercial vineyard on the now acclaimed Te Muna Road.
This is pinot in the dark fruit mode – blackberry and plum in this vintage. Typical Martinborough syrupy texture but with more violet than spice. Oak is perfectly integrated with the rich, ripe fruit.
Hard to resist once you have opened the bottled so entrancing are the aromas and delicious flavours. And it is even harder to resist at this great price for top-drawer Martinborough pinot.
2008 Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir (NZ) $24 – spicy, slurpy and smooth, a Central bargain.
2008 Evandale Estate Pinot Noir (TAS) $21 – Made so well by Guy Wagner (Bass Strait Pinot), the master of great value pinot. Well flavoured with soft ripeness – ‘a cuddly pinot,’ said one.
2009 Clarence Plains Pinot Noir (TAS) $21 Young vines from Rokeby (across the Derwent from Hobart) produce a big, full-flavoured pinot (dark fruits), expertly made by Julian Alcorso.
