Black Cow has been a phenomenon ever since it opened barely twelve months ago. Adored by Launceston locals and visitors alike who pretty much fill all available spots each evening, this city bistro is a tribute to the excellence that can be achieved through simplicity and focus.
At Black Cow you’ll simply find the best that green Tasmanian pastures and beef cattle can produce. It is a steak house so the emphasis is on beef, but there are a few other menu diversions as well as tasty side dishes like potato galette stack or asparagus with hazelnuts. The well-chosen wine list includes Tasmania’s best pinots.

Start with a mix of oysters so that you have room to enjoy Tasmanian grass fed beef in all its magnificence.
If you’re hungry, go for the succulent rib-eye with Black Cow butter. Scotch fillet is a winner too. Here you might be tempted by the truffle Bearnaise, although that tasty ‘house’ butter is irresistible.

Aahahaafternoon delight…

So sang the Skyland Vocal Band and they may well have been thinking about working up their appetites for Daniel Alps’ Afternoon Berry Delight. His latest sumptuous dessert says it all about Tasmania and summer.
A loyal band of local suppliers deliver exquisitely flavoured berry fruits – tiny Alpine strawberries, so sweetly and intensely flavoured, plump blueberries bursting like fat caviar and luscious blackberries nestle among light-as-a-feather sponge and creme anglaise, topped with house-made berry icecream and nutty biscuit shard.

The fine art of the bar snack is having an excellent showing in Stillwater’s bar room, adjacent to the main restaurant and with a commanding view of the river and the comings and goings around this busy precinct.

Stillwater’s menu sure makes a change from the deep fried bibs and bobs and sausage rolls that are standard on many of our local pub menus and reflects the Asian inspiration of their main menu. From 4.30pm you can enjoy a refreshing beverage and accompany it with interesting nibbles while enjoying the sunset over the river. Oyster natural and as shooters, chorizo wonton rolls with chilli jam or warm olives with rosemary oil are on the list. It’s a hard ask to decide between the spicy tempura mushrooms with yoghurt dip or the Asian coconut prawn sticks with ginger aioli as the most delicious snacky morsels sampled recently.

The name is a nod to the sometimes present mud flats of the North Esk River just as it meets the broad Tamar River basin. High tide or low tide this Launceston (Tasmania) river front location is as alluring as is Mud’s stylish interior and simple, tasty food.

The hip and happening bar is a great place to be at any time of the day – more relaxing during the afternoon but with a bit more buzz, if that be your thing, during the evening. Mud serves only the best top shelf goodies and local, Australian and imported wines.

The taste plate is a good way to begin your meal while the seasonal risotti, particularly the springtime version with artichokes, are always must picks off the menu.

Lunch and dinner, 7 days, phone 03 6334 5066. Mud is at the Seaport complex.
