These are exciting wines at middle of the range prices.
The 2007 Peregrine Pinot has a heady and seductive perfume with lots of candied fruits, rose petals and plum. Lovely rich fruit in the mouth and also good acid, giving the wine real life and zip. It would be a struggle not to like this wine; it has already wowed all who have tasted. Vintage 2007 in Central Otago was small so we don’t expect stocks to last long.

The Heemskerk Trio

An icon Tasmanian label is reborn.

Founded by Graham Wiltshire in 1975, taken over by Roederer, bought by Josef Chromy, sold to Pipers Brook Vineyard and then to Cellarmasters, redeveloped by Fosters, made by Tasmanian Anna Pooley and admired by all who have tasted. Thus is the short, but rather busy, history of the Heemskerk brand.

2007 Heemskerk Riesling (Riversdale, Coal V) is a masterpiece of style and poise with floral, citrus and tropical fruit basket guava notes as well. The balance is superb; there’s no strident acid just a beautiful harmony between ripe, soft fruit and crispness. Maturation in large, old French oak is the key to the style.

2006 Heemskerk Chardonnay (Tolpuddle, Coal V) is a well bred wine. Perfect fruit, stunning oak and long term maturation on lees has produced a muscular style of chardonnay with backbone but just the right amount of white peach and richness of texture. Rivals Eileen Hardy and Petaluma for class.

2007 Heemskerk Pinot Noir (Lowestoft, Derwent V) is (typically for the variety) the most fascinating of the trio. The wine is so pure and precise that a change in your mood, a little food, a taste of another wine, a longer while in the glass, all elicit a new aroma and taste to ponder. Primary fruit is to the fore which will allow bottle age to give secondary complexity. There are red berries, hints of plum, rose petal, fresh rosemary, charry oak, mocha/cocoa and a silky texture.

That company includes Martinborough Vineyards, Ata Rangi and Dry River.
The 2006 Te Kairanga Pinot is one of the most delicious sub $30 pinots we have ever tasted. Exuberantly perfumed and sweetly flavoured with spice and cherries. It is lovely enough on its own but is also terrific with meat braises. The next time we purchase this wine it will be well over $30 so our great offer, while current stocks last.
