East Coast, Tasmania –
While one falls completely in love with each vintage of Apsley Gorge Pinot (East Coast TAS) and never wants it to end, a new vintage is always greeted with more than a frisson of excitement. Could it be as good, or maybe better than the last? Owner/winemaker Brian Franklin is tireless in his desire to make better and better pinot and spends a good part of each year learning as much as he can in Burgundy.
Spicy and charry oak evident initially but then the sweet, sweet fruit insists its way to the front. Young pinots, not long bottled, all benefit from a good dose of air so decant or pour a smidgen into a big glass.
Each time you return to the glass another layer of rich dark cherry or damson plum peels away to reveal more floral and fruit fragrances. And then the aromas just become tantalisingly mouth-watering. It is quite firm at present from oak and good fruit tannins but we know from experience that in a few months 2008 Apsley Pinot will develop its characteristic plushness.
These are pinots to keep, becoming more and more complex and textured with 3-4+ years bottle age.
Apsley Gorge Vineyard is situated north of Bicheno on Tasmania’s East Coast.
