Rokeby/Cambridge, S E Tasmania –
A richly fruity pinot from Clarence House’s young vines and the clever hands of winemaking guru Julian Alcorso. Clarence House was built in 1830 on land which was originally the market garden for Hobart. Current owner David Kilpatrick planted vines on the NE slopes of Clarence Plains in 1998.
Previous vintages have been top-sellers to all parts of the country and nothing disappoints with this 2009 release. The colour is richly ruby/purple/magenta and it has an amazing perfume harking back to breakfast and the lightly stewed Damson plums among the mix of blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.
In the mouth there’s good fruit, acid in balance and enough softly tannic chewiness to be a decent pinot contender. If you can keep for 6 months or more so much the better; in the last few weeks we’ve had fantastic feedback from fans of the 2008 Clarence Plains which was drinking really well when supply ran out. Buy now, drink later. The vineyard is at Rokeby on Hobart’s eastern shore.
