Marlborough, New Zealand –
Marlborough pinots can be on the assertive side with highly perfumed, blockbuster fruit. They’re pretty exciting but it is also a delight to find a pinot that has the beguiling complexity that bottle age and whole bunch clusters (as opposed to de-stemmed berries) can bring.
Dom Georges Michel’s 2004 La Reserve Pinot is perfumed with red cherry, spice and hints of creamy mushrooms. The real delight is in the palate – the ultra velvety texture comes from the aforementioned whole bunch plus five years in bottle. As you might expect from the name, Domaine Georges Michel wines are made in the food compatible French style, with the obvious sweet fruit tempered by savoury and secondary notes.
It is a delicious wine in perfect drinking condition right now. Diam cork.
