Coal Valley, Derwent Valley Tasmania –
Kate Hill came to Tasmania in 2006, having had 10 years winemaking experience in
South Australia, France, California and Chile. She was an executive
winemaker with Orlando Wyndham for four years at their Riverina winery.
The previous vintages of this wine have been run-away successes: vintage 2008 winning the coveted Trophies for Best Pinot Noir and Best Wine of Show at the 2010 Tasmanian Wine Show, and the 2009 release selling out in the blink of an eye.
Kate Hill's 2010 Pinot Noir is made from premium Coal Valley and Derwent Valley fruit. Like its predecessors this is in the bigger pinot spectrum. There are intense berry fruits, mulberry and youngberry
particularly, with sour cherry and clove spice. At this youthful stage
it is firm and savoury in the mouth (definitely no bad thing),
indicating the charm that will ensue from languishing long in the
cellar. Twelve months and plenty of aeration will certainly work some
magic, but by then it will be sold out! Get some now and forget about it.
2010 Kate Hill Pinot Noir $36, $195 six pack
