Weighty, mysterious, illuminating…, the pinots of Oregon represent uncharted territory for many Australian pinot drinkers. Style-wise they most closely resemble the wines of Central Otago, with added elegance.

• 2008 Elk Cove Willamette Pinot Noir – Sweet cherries, floral notes but plum too. Always elegant but with velvet-fisted power. Willamette rhymes with damn it.
• 2008 Rex Hill Willamette Pinot Noir – Luscious, vibrant perfume and fruit purity with balance from this well-established producer.
• 2007 Stoller SV Dundee Hills Pinot Noir – A blend of Stoller's favourite barrels which best articulate the characteristics of each vintage. 'Here the nose is both riper and more complex with expressive aromas of raspberry, spiced cherry and a hint of cranberry that complement the detailed, rich and round flavors that possess a very suave mouth feel and good concentration on the notably more complex and longer finish.' • 2007 Cristom Sommers Reserve Pinot Noir – Fascinating, complex; black olive fruits and savoury herbs with blood plums. Indigenous yeasts, minimal handling from Steve Doerner. Splendid.
• 2008 Chehalem Wind Ridge Pinot Noir - pronounced chu-hay-lem. Robert Parker 91 points – 'cedar, cherry blossom, smoke, raspberry, and cranberry. Denser and richer than the preceding wines, it has a velvety texture, considerable underlying structure, with densely packed fruit just waiting to provide full expression.'
  
• 2008 Evesham Wood Les Puits Sec Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir -  '...cranberry and red pinot fruit nose that slides gracefully into rich, round and medium-bodied flavors that possess lovely depth and a real sense of grace on the dusty and subtly structured finish that is deceivingly persistent because it seems to disappear and then suddenly, it’s back.'
