Wagram, Austria
Gruner Veltliner is the great grape of Austria. They grow riesling there too, and that’s also excellent but gruner is especially exciting stuff.
It is like a cross between the best aspects of riesling, pinot gris and chardonnay rolled into one delicious package. It is fresh and aromatic, sometimes quite peppery spiced, and textured with a clean finish. Gruner Veltliner is a highly desirable aperitif in the dry versions or can be seductively luscious in the sweeter styles. Interestingly gruners age well, holding their form without change for a decade or more.
Fass is a fresh but textured dry gruner veltliner. It is only 12.5% alcohol but has considerably more weight and flavour than this would suggest.
