Central Otago, New Zealand -
Rabbit Ranch from Central Otago is one of those go-anywhere, do-anything pinots that never fails to please. The quirky packaging is also a winner.
We've been awaiting the arrival of the 2009 since we had the heads-up from the excellent folk who make it, that it was going to be a rather smart little rabbit in that low-yielding vintage. And indeed 2009 Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir has all our favourite rabbity attributes - sweet fruit on the nose with hints of briar and wild thyme (of which there is plenty on those seemingly barren Central hills). There are pretty floral elements too - in general there's a bit more fruit purity than the slightly funky 2008.
In
the mouth it is ever so pleasingly tasty and smooth with a rich note of
licorice at the end. As always, the perfect party pinot and it is particularly good with food from salmon to beef as it isn't as weighty as some of its Central cousins.
