Maremma, Tuscany, Italy –
If the image of rolling hills and stately Tuscan pines of Chianti is firmly implanted it may be challenging to realise that Tuscany has an extended sea coast. The Maremma occupies the south-west of Tuscany and extends into northern Lazio. It is home to beaches, marshes, cowboys, sheepdogs and bistecca destined for the tables of Florence.
Sangiovese gets a new name too – here it is called Morellino di Scansano and allowed blending material includes ciliegiolo (a reference to its cherry charcters) and alicante.
Bellamarsilia (named for the famous Maremma tower) is Poggio Argentiera’s take on Maremma sangiovese and it is utterly delicious. The nose is fine and perfumed with intense cherry scents and the faintest whiff of currant, unimpeded by oak. It has a gentle sangiovese grip but the fruit is fullsome enough to counterbalance.
This wine is seriously interesting and enjoyable drinking.
