It is not just those pretty footballers hogging the limelight, anything Spanish is so hot right now, particularly food and drink. Pinot Shop's Spanish red corner is one of the busiest parts of our shop, eclipsed only by the Spanish sherry department.

Reds only in this 6 pack, dominated of course by tempranillo but also other fascinating grape varieties of various regions.

• 2008 DJP Petalos Mencia (DO Bierzo) - as close to pinot as you can be when you're made from indigenous Spanish grape mencia. Grown at 900m, biodynamic producer, ancient vines, ultra steep slopes tilled by draught horse. Magnificent wine.
• 2008 Palacios Remondo La Montesa (Rioja) - a blend of several varieties, including garnacha (grenache), tempranillo, graciano and mazuelo. We've stocked this for several vintages now and each new release has presented as the same ultra smooth, elegant, deliciously complex and satisfying blend. Superb with a wide range of food.
• 2009 Cillar de Silos Joven Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero) - Young, vibrant tempranillo with less than a year's oak age. Raspberries to the fore in this ultra-juicy wine. "Gamey and smooth, concentrated and elegant."
• 2009 Telmo Rodriguez LZ Tempranillo (Rioja) - "Literally a new Rioja—fresh-but-concentrated, tight, unwooded. Impeccable fruit/tannin/acid harmony. Typical Rioja characters of red berry, roasted meat, and high note of dried herb and blue-note Tempranillo." - Scott Wasley The Spanish Acquisition
• 2005 Bodegas Castana Hecula Monastrell (Yecla) - Incredibly soft, easy-to-drink red wine with plenty of spice and rich dark fruits. In its prime.
  
• 2009 Telmo Rodriguez Dehesa Gago (DO Toro) - Tempranillo at its most exuberant. "Riotous brambly black-berried fruit, with soft earthy tannins and a buzz of natural acidity. Dark, meaty,delicious. It’s a full style—glyceric richness of canned black cherry is impregnated with red florals; but mainly through great natural acid, manages still to finish fresh and bright." - Scott Wasley
