Coal V, Tamar V, Tasmania –
The Tasmanian Wine Show, held early each year is now 20 years old. James Halliday and Huon Hooke are entrenched on the judging panel, with a third guest judge invited each year – this year Anna Pooley and Peter Bosworth shared the role.

  • 3 × 2007 Chartley Riesling (Tamar V) $26.50 – TROPHY BEST RIESLING & TROPHY RUNNER-UP BEST WINE OF SHOW. Winemaker Julian Alcorso is an acknowledged riesling master. Lime and floral intermingle in an exquisitely refreshing wine. A little zippier than the ‘rounder/softer’ 2008 rieslings; the ’07’s more classic style may have influenced the judges’ final decision in a top group of rieslings.
  • 2 × 2008 Bay of Fires Riesling (multi regional) $33 – TROPHY CHAIRMAN’S SELECTION (Halliday’s own pick) – One of Australia’s top rieslings, winemaker Francine Austin allows riesling’s zestiness and vivacity come through but tempers this with a touch of aromatic floral. Brilliantly structured. A super wine.
  • 3 × 2008 Velo Chardonnay (Tamar) $30 – TROPHY PEOPLE’S CHOICE …and I hearily endorse the democratic decision, the Velo Chardonnay with its fine fruit overlaid with prettily perfumed oak was one of my favourite wines from the gold medal tasting. Classy, will cellar for at least 3-4 and gain more in texture.
  • 3 × 2008 Pressing Matters R69 (Coal V) $33 – TROPHY BEST SWEET WINE – medium sweet; this wine smells and drinks like a first-class German spatlaese at less than half the price. It is a harmonious and balanced wine without harsh acid or cloying sweetness. The overall impression is one of sweet honeysuckle underpinned with minerals. Pressing Matters Rieslings at all grades of sweetness are show stoppers.
  • 1 × 2008 Craigow Dessert Riesling (Coal V) $22 – GOLD MEDAL – full-on dessert style, nectar smooth, lovely balance. Great with rich pate, cheese or creamy dessert like pannacotta.

That’s not to say we’ve become too exclusive - we also stock an interesting range of delicious wines for those (rare) times when you’re not drinking pinot…
