Timo Mayer comes from a family of German vignerons that have been making wine for 400 years. After coming to Australia in 1990, he completed oenology studies at Charles Sturt in Wagga. He established his 2.5ha Mayer vineyard near Healesville in 1999 on very steep slopes, hence the name 'Bloody Hill' given to some of his wines.
2020 Mayer Yarra Valley Close Planted Pinot Noir: From a close-planted section of the vineyard. The style is alluring - one of sweet red cherry fruit, and gentle spices. Medium weight in the mouth with soft texture. Diam cork and wax closure.
2020 Dr Mayer Yarra Valley Pinot Noir: Same block selection as the Mayer but 100% whole bunch. In Timo's hands the whole bunch is never in your face, just an ever-so-slightly smoky whiff subsumed by dark fruits and spices. Intense. Diam cork and wax closure.
2018 Dr Mayer Remstal German Pinot: Timo's notes - 'Spaetburgunder from Weinstadt im Remstal, Wuerttemberg. Our son Rivar was over there in the 2018 and 2019 vintage. This is 100% whole bunch Pinot from a certified organic vineyard.
2020 Mayer Bloody Hill Pinot Noir: From a section of the famed Bloody Hill planted at less density than the Mayer Pinot Noirs. Fresh, juicy and easy. Cherry, meaty notes, ultra-fine structure.
2020 Mayer Yarra Valley Syrah: Timo sources fruit for his Syrah from a small portion of the Bloody Hill Vineyard. 100% whole bunch. Dark bramble berry fruits with a spicy and a sleek mouthfeel. Cool climate style shiraz with a leaner, finer structure than Barossa Valley.
