Ata Rangi 2016 Pinot Noir
Winery : Ata Rangi
Clive Paton, the founder of Ata Rangi (which translates as 'new dawn') planted the original home block in 1980, making him one of the handful of pioneers of the Martinborough region. The wines go from strength to strength: Helen Masters' masterful winemaking, vine age, a deep understanding of site and the wisdom of decades shows in every beautiful new release.
At the 2010 Wellington Pinot Celebration, Ata Rangi and Felton Road were honoured with the inaugural awards 'Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa', which translates from Maori as 'Great Growth of New Zealand'.
Michele's notes 2016 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir: Glittering ruby/magenta in the glass. Enticingly aromatic with raspberry brioche (a classic young Ata Rangi trait), then wet slate, damask rose and violet. Blue fruits too with hint of spice. Licorice and juicy berry fruits in the mouth with savoury char from the oak. What a keeper this will be with its fine, clean tannins, and slightly salty acid tang. Glorious.
