Top wines from a recent tasting of Burgundies.
The mixed pack contains 2 x Faiveley La Framboisiere, 1 x Faiveley Clos des Myglands, 1 x Bruno Clair Marsannay, 1 x Bouley Volnay and 1 x Geantet-Pansiot Gevrey Chambertin.
2016 Faiveley Mercurey 'La Framboisière': Aptly named, the wine is redolent with raspberry-scented fruit, on the nose and flooding the palate with its sweet litheness. Bright and very appealing. Tim Atkin: 'What's not to like?'
2014 Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay 'Les Grasses Tete': Really pretty nose with sweet almond, cherry and spice. With breathing the anise and szechuan pepper notes are more evident. Round and full in the mouth with excellent persistence, but there's delicacy here too.
2016 Faiveley Mercurey 'Clos des Myglands' (Monopole): ONLY AVAILABLE in the mixed pack. Dark fruits, notably blackberry with spice. Fuller bodied than La Framboisiere, round, soft and very satisfying in the mouth. James Suckling 'If you can't afford a top Cote de Nuits, this is a very good alternative.'
2015 Domaine Jean-Marc Bouley Volnay: Aromatic with dark red rose florals, spice and earth. Wild strawberries and darker fruits in the mouth; the flavours are soft, full and all-enveloping. Persistent, there's depth to the layers. A little bit of intrigue here.
2015 Domaine Geantet-Pansiot Gevrey Chambertin: I've been impressed by the wines from this Domaine ever since I first tasted the 2011s. While the Chambolle usually wins my heart, this time the Gevrey elicited the 'wow' word from my lips. Dark, ripe cherries on the nose with turkish delight and then a lavender/camphor note. Complex, rich and deep, very inviting.
