Jim Chatto came to Tasmania in 1998 to be the winemaker for the then Rosevears Estate (now incorporated into Tamar Ridge Wines). His career path has led him to be appointed as Chief Winemaker for both the McWilliams group and also Kreglinger Wine Estates. Meanwhile, he and wife Daisy have established a vineyard at Cygnet and created their own Tasmanian label from fruit grown in the Huon Valley.
In 2019 Jim Chatto made a range of Pinot Noirs from northern Tasmanian fruit. The smoke from bush fires in the very southern parts of Tasmania tainted the pinot noir crop in the Huon/D’Entrecasteux region.
2019 Chatto Tasmania Pinot Noir: Winemaker notes - 'A blend of three vineyard sites in northern Tasmania, including Marion's and Bird. A mix of red and black berry fruits and violets. Lifted five spice and savoury notes... long and multi-layered finish.' Michele's notes: Licorice and dark fruits, nicely pinot-funky. Brooding, dark red roses, jubey in the mouth.
2019 Chatto Marion's Vineyard Pinot Noir: Planted in 1979, Marion's Vineyard occupies one of the most spectacular vineyard sites on the sunny banks of the west Tamar. Winemaker notes - 'Dark-berry fruited, brooding and muscular style, reflecting the nature of this wonderful site, and the structure West Tamar pinot is known for. A serious wine for the cellar.'
2019 Chatto Bird Vineyard Pinot Noir: ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE MIXED SIX: Bird Vineyard was planted in the very early 2000s to the best pinot clones available by Pipers Brook Vineyard a few kilometres south of the main PBV site. With the vines now approaching 20 years old, this is a source of high quality fruit. Winemaker notes - 'Bright and crunchy red fruits, laced with super aromatic spice. Ethereal and racy, with a long, sapid finish. A lot of intensity packed into a lighter bodied frame.'
