D'Entrecasteaux Channel is the picturesque waterway between Bruny Island and the Tasmanian mainland, extending around to the estuary of the Huon River, south of Hobart. These are fleshy pinots, with volume and silkiness even in their youth. Flavours are full but balanced, a result of the long, long ripening season in this very southerly part of the world. In nearby Ranelagh/Huon, the high latitude and micro-climate create pinot noirs of exceptional concentration, while in Cradoc, refinement and poise rule the style.
2016 Tinderbox Pinot Noir - Tinderbox owner Liz McGown planted the first vines in 1994. Alain Rousseau of Frogmore Creek Winery makes the wine. This is a beautifully aromatic wine with dark berry, lip-smacking juicy fruit, cedar and spicy notes, set off by a textured and quite slippery palate with beautifully fine tannins. It is a classic of its region.

2017 Mewstone Pinot Noir - Brothers Jonny and Matt Hughes were awarded Best New Winery in Halliday's 2019 Companion. This small D'Entrecasteaux producer makes exceptional wines, not the least this full-flavoured, flowing pinot noir.

2016 Elsewhere Pinot Noir - East bank of the Huon R. Pioneer in the region, having established in the 1980s by Eric & Jette Phillips. Current owners, the Knights, have rehabilitated the vineyard for the production of premium wine, pinot noir in particular. Aromatic with cranberry & orange peel; sweet, juicy red berry fruits finishing clean in the mouth.

2014 Two Bud Spur Pinot Noir - Planted in 1996 on a north-facing site in Gardners Bay. Due to the extreme southerly location, Two Bud Spur is one of the last vineyards to harvest. Soft, jubey, succulent style

2018 Hughes & Hughes Pinot Noir - from the Mewstone team. Delicious sweet cherry fruit with dry, chalky tannins on the finish. Small amount of whole bunch lifts the fragrance. Touch of pepper spice.

2013 Kate Hill Huon Pinot Noir - An excellent example of the 'Cradoc style' (Sailor Seeks Horse makes pinot from this area): Pretty, lifted perfume - 5% whole bunch helps. Medium density with sweetly beguiling and persistent fruit. Delectable.
