2018 Young Guns of Wine: Jonny Hughes 'Best New Act'
Mewstone Wines is a venture between Jonny Hughes (ex Moorilla) and his brother Matt. The vineyard comprises 3ha at Flowerpot in Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is named after the island of Mewstone, a small, rugged outcrop off Tasmania's south coast, not far from the Maatsuyker group.
Michele's notes: Supple, red-cherry-sappy and ever so slightly smoky initially. After breathing darker fruits come to the fore with enticing blackcurrant/jubey characters. Candied violets too, and roses. There's a lovely glycerol flow across the palate, finishing with talc-like tannins. An elegant and serene Mewstone Pinot Noir.
Winemaker notes: ' The two blocks were picked individually on the 11th and 12th of April. Each block was then naturally fermented with 15% whole bunch in our old milk vats. These were pressed after 20 days on skins to oak, 40% new, and matured prior to bottling in late summer. Only 1920 bottles produced.'
