Akitu 2016 A1 Black Label Pinot Noir
Winery : Akitu
TROPHY Best New Zealand Red Wine, International Wine Challenge UK 2018
Akitu is a relatively new Central Otago label, but its silky plushness has caught the attention of scribes and consumers alike. In 2002 and 2003 Andrew Donaldson planted 12ha to pinot noir on a family property at Mt Barker near picturesque Wanaka, in the most northerly part of Central Otago. The Abel clone (made famous by Ata Rangi) has a significant impact on the style of Akitu A1 as does the use of 40% whole bunch.
Michele's notes: The fruit is quite vivacious but also rich (without overt density), tending to dark cherry and plum. The flavours fill the mouth and are very persistent. It has impressive volume, smoothness and succulence.
