Dr Edge 2016 Pinot Noirs
Winery : Dr Edge
Dr Edge is former Bay of Fires winemaker Peter Dredge's new venture. This is his second vintage of Dr Edge Pinot Noir - a blend of East Coast, Tamar Valley and Derwent Valley fruit.
Just arrived is the COMPLETE SET of 2016 Dr Edge Pinots, which were so enthusiastically reviewed by James Halliday, Weekend Australian magazine, June.
***Because the 'sub-regional' wines are in such incredibly short supply we are offering them only as a QUARTET with the Tasmanian blend, below.
2016 Dr Edge EAST Pinot Noir $55: HALLIDAY 96pts 'The most fragrant/scented of the four '16 Dr Edge Pinots; the palate is pure, intense, red-fruited with remarkable freshness and length. It caresses the mouth and fills the senses with its magical bouquet.'
2016 Dr Edge NORTH Pinot Noir $55: Tamar Valley fruit. GARY WALSH 96pts, Winefront 'Beautiful perfume here, but also quite serious, with fruit still in the red fruit spectrum, but fresh blackberry and some dark cherry too, a little smoke, peat and gunpowder, spice and dried roses. Medium weight, latticed with fine almost sticky graphite tannin, clean pure acidity, restrained but ample flavour, and a soaring finish with tannin the reluctant break of a fond handshake, fingers slipping gently away. Well well well. Quite a wine.'
2016 Dr Edge SOUTH Pinot Noir $55: Derwent V fruit. HALLIDAY 96pts 'A highly expressive bouquet with scents of cherry blossom and rose petals, the palate painted by juicy red fruits inducing repeated visits to the glass. Peter Dredge has crafted a wine with a mesmerisingly intense palate of red and purple fruits without sacrificing elegance or purity. A truly beautiful pinot.'
2016 Dr Edge TASMANIAN Pinot Noir $55: Blend of Derwent Valley 50%, East Coast 30%, Tamar Valley 20%. HALLIDAY 97pts 'This is fragrant and complex, with red cherry, dark cherry and damson plum. It has the tannin structure of Burgundy, which lengthens the finish and aftertaste. Utterly gorgeous. Drink to 2030'
Michele's notes: Gleaming and bright cherry colour; fragrant with enhanced aromatics from whole bunches in the ferment - smoky szechuan pepper and clove-scented carnations, which is most attractive. Terrific nervy tension and pinosity in the mouth, with a foil of chalky tannins. It is one of those alluring pinots that become more and more interesting with each sip. Dr Edge is not a heavy wine but there's depth to the flavours. The clean finish makes it a super match for 'meaty' seafood like stewed or grilled octopus, or the unctuous flesh of slow-cooked pork belly.
A few years in the cellar will amplify the sweet fruit characters.
