Michele's tasting notes: Vanilla and cherries leap from the glass, and then spice. It's brilliantly aromatic - so much of the appeal of these top Tasmanian pinots.
Dark, rich and brooding in the mouth with intense fruit and toasty oak; there are glimpses of the joy to come with cellar time. Fabulous viscosity, and flavours that reach every nook and cranny. Impeccable tannins, complex, power with restraint. Slightly salty/licorice finish, which is delicious.
Home Hill Winery is at Ranelagh in Tasmania's Huon Valley. Management of the vineyard, day to day operations and marketing is a family affair with Terry, Rosemary, daughter Kelly and viticulture manager son Sean all involved. Paul and Gilli Lipscombe, of Sailor Seeks Horse, are the winemakers for Home Hill Pinot Noirs.
Kelly's Reserve is made from one of the original Home Hill blocks, planted in 1995. Initially it was Lyre trellised but Terry Bennett (owner and fanatical viticulturist) has adapted the trellising to a style of his own invention, based on years of experience and the particular growing conditions of the site. After the wine is made, the barrels are rated, with only the best going into Home Hill Kelly's Reserve. So, this wonderful wine is barrel-selected from a single site.
