Home Hill Winery is at Ranelagh in Tasmania's Huon Valley. Management of the vineyard, day to day operations and marketing is a family affair with Terry, Rosemary, daughter Kelly and viticulture manager son Sean all involved.
Kelly's Reserve is made from one of the original Home Hill blocks, planted in 1995. Initially it was Lyre trellised but Terry Bennett (owner and fanatical viticulturist) has adapted the trellising to a style of his own invention, based on years of experience and the particular growing conditions of the site. After the wine is made, the barrels are rated, with only the best going into Home Hill Kelly's Reserve. This wine is therefore barrel-selected from a single site.
Michele's tasting notes: It's enough to make you swoon. The perfume is SO enticing. Cherry, cinnamon with marzipan and milk chocolate. Wet slate too and a bloody/ferrous thing going on - all the Kelly's Reserve aromatic complexities that give and give, the more the wine breathes.
Silky, beautiful viscosity in the mouth. Interesting salty tang which works well in tandem with the sweet, ripe fruit (think salted caramel). Flavours build with each sip. So appetising, mouth watering...Intensity, complexity and balance with nothing out of place. Perfectly poised wine, everything in harmony, all class.
