Marchand & Burch 2018 Burgundy Collection
Winery : Marchand & Burch
Marchand & Burch is a collaboration between Burch Family Wines (producers of Howard Park) and Pascal Marchand, a Canadian by birth who has spent more than three decades in Burgundy, including as winemaker for Comte-Armand. All the wines are under SCREWCAP
2018 Volnay 1er Fremiets: Michele's notes - Deeply coloured. Enhanced bouquet - raspberry, slate and florals with cinnamon and anise spices. The intensity of ripe fruit is the dominant feature on the palate but the texture is rounded and full. Fine, chalky and slightly gritty backbone is a necessary foil to the jubiness. The wine has the strength yet fragility of egg shells. Very drinkable now.
2018 Vosne Romanee: Michele’s notes - Deep and dark. Meaty, with rich cherry/berry fruit overlay, cocoa, anise, tobacco, woody herbs (think rosemary). Ultra tasty and very complex in the mouth - jubey pastilles with licorice and dark chocolate notes making a groovy base line. Long finish.
2018 Bourgogne: Michele's notes - Berry brioche, whiff of baked rhubarb, with ferrous minerality/slate - all in all, exotic aromas that say 'I'm not from the Southern Hemisphere'. Dark fruits, grilled mushrooms (umami) and typically French dry savouriness in the mouth, but the fruit powers through. Intriguing and very tasty - crying out for long-braised oxtail.
2018 Marsannay: Michele’s notes - Very deep colour. Sweet dark cherry fruit leaps from the glass, with notes of chocolate. Definitely a cherry ripe mix! Generous flavours, deliciously gritty fine tannins and sweet fruit to the end. Very good indeed.
2018 Cote de Nuits Villages: Michele’s notes - Vivid hues, with deep ruby. Slate, ferrous/blood elements with bramble berries and blueberry. Flowers too and roasted nuts. Those dark fruits flood the palate - all very sleek - and there's licorice too. Ultra fine tannins. Complex, harmoniously balanced and very inviting. A wine of finesse.
