Marchand & Burch is a collaboration between Burch Family Wines (producers of Howard Park) and Pascal Marchand, a Canadian by birth who has spent more than three decades in Burgundy, including as winemaker for Comte-Armand. All the wines are under SCREWCAP
2017 Marchand & Burch Volnay 1er Fremiets: Fremiets lies to the North East of the village, adjacent to Pommard; the vine age is on average 35 years.
Michele's notes: Deeply coloured. What a bouquet! Red flowers, raspberry, cloves, cinnamon, white pepper and almond. Its a vibrant and exciting introduction to what happens on the palate. The wine has volume, the flavours are everywhere - sweet dark cherry fruit, licorice and its associated salty tang, with cleansing/slightly astringent and fine tannins to finish. Good pinot yin-yang going on here. Complex wine that's particularly more-ish.
2017 Marchand & Burch Marsannay: The wine is made with grapes from two different plots - Les Longeroies and En la Poulotte. Les Longeroiesis very steep at the top of the vineyard and then gradually gets flatter in the lower part. This plot is one of the best in Marsannay. En la Poulotte is located in the village of Couchey, just south of Marsannay. 100% de-stemmed fruit.
Michele's notes: Appealing aromas of red fruits, spice, coffee and beef tartare. The flavours are soft in the mouth, but there's weight and substance too. Savoury at the end with bright acid. Excellent balance.
2017 Marchand & Burch Cotes de Nuits – Villages: Fruit for this wine comes from the extreme south of the Cote de Nuits - Corgoloin, Au Clou, Les Perrières, Les Monts de Boncourt and Les Retraits. 30% whole bunch, unfined, unfiltered.
Michael's notes: Dense red fruits, charcuterie, slate, roasted nuts - think smokehouse almonds. On the palate the fruit is complemented by earthy notes from excellent oak handling. Comes alive with air and time.
2018 Marchand & Burch Morgon (Gamay): This is one of the best Morgons we've tasted! Produced from 45 year old vines. Meaty, with intense briary red fruits. Fine and very dry, chalky tannins. Excellent savoury complexity.
