Timo Mayer comes from a family of German vignerons that have been making wine for 400 years. After coming to Australia in 1990, he completed oenology studies at Charles Sturt in Wagga and then went on to gain experience under Steve Weber at De Bortoli before becoming the winemaker at Gembrook Hill.

He established his 2.5ha Mayer vineyard near Healesville in 1999 on very steep slopes, hence the name 'Bloody Hill' given to some of his wines. 'We believe that wines are made in the vineyard and therefore try to interfere as little as possible.' He aims to make wines that have a point of difference - 'Bring back the funk' is his special catch-cry.

2016 Mayer Dr Mayer Pinot Noir: The good Dr is 100% whole bunch. In a warm vintage like 2016 this lifts the perfume and adds to the texture, without bitterness. Garnet in colour. Aromas of Kentish cherries and orange rind, with fresh woody herbs and a softening note of milk chocolate/almond. It gives more and more, the longer it sits in the glass. Gosh... it has excellent volume in the mouth and length. Impeccable balance, with a fresh juiciness to finish. Diam cork and wax finish.

2016 Mayer (Close-Planted) Yarra Pinot Noir: From a close-planted section of the vineyard, roughly 20% whole bunch (depending on season) in this wine. Slightly brighter ruby/crimson hues. Sweet cherry and fragrant cardamom on the nose, very beguiling, and a little roasted-nuts/smoky-matchstick, enhancing the naturally sweet fruit, rather than detracting. Intense and powerful in the mouth, with a quite firm backbone, at present. This will dissolve to silk with 3-4 years bottle age. Diam cork and wax finish.

2015 Mayer Upper Yarra Granite Chardonnay: Gary Walsh Winefront '...Stone fruit, citrus, stony crushed rocks thing, cool acidity, almond, tang on the finish and a smattering of green olive and herbs. Milky. Chalky finish...'
