Mewstone 2018 Pinot Noir
Winery : Mewstone Wines
2019 BEST NEW WINERY James Halliday Wine Companion
2018 BEST NEW ACT Young Guns of Wine: Jonny Hughes
Mewstone Wines is a venture between Jonny Hughes and his brother Matt. The vineyard comprises 3ha at Flowerpot in Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is named after the island of Mewstone, a small, rugged outcrop off Tasmania's south coast, not far from the Maatsuyker group.
Mewstone 2018 Pinot Noir is a marvellous follow on from two superb releases in 2016 and 2017. The Hughes brothers have in only three vintages created a Tasmanian classic.
Michele's notes: Deep colour with magenta flashes. Exuberant perfume of mulberries and fragrant flowers offset by wet stone, coffee and hint of cardamom. Lusciously textured yet with excellent pinot energy and vitality in the mouth. There's a delicious tussle between sweet, sour and savoury elements, to the delight of all the taste buds. Its perfect weight (not too heavy) and balance will suit quite spicy food. A great choice for the cellar - expect at least 10 years from this beautiful wine.
