Principia was estalished by winemaker Darrin Gaffy in 1995 at Red Hill in Victoria's Mornington region. The wine is grown, made and bottled on site. No irrigation is used, no pesticides are used, juice is extracted by a basket press, gravity controls all juice, must and wine transfers and indigenous yeasts are used for both primary and secondary ferments.
2016 Principia Pinot Noir: Fragrant with violets, strawberry and fresh herbs. Soft red fruits and a silky flow across the palate. Very persistent and exceptionally fine tannins.
2016 Principia Kindred Hill Pinot Noir: Serene, beguiling perfume. Cherries, quince and tiny touch vanilla, not too sweet though. Little bit of blood and stone comes through with time in the glass.
2016 Principia Altior Pinot Noir: Juicy and energetic in the mouth. Savoury char from the oak. Cleansing tannins, almost slightly chewy, which is terrific.
The name is pronounced prin-kip-eea (which is evidently how Caesar would have said it with a hard 'c'), the name comes from the word 'beginnings' in Latin. It is also the name of Sir Isaac Newton's famous scientific work which incorporated his theory of gravitation and the laws of motion.
