Quartz Reef Bendigo Pinot Noirs
Winery : Quartz Reef
Quartz Reef winemaker Rudi Bauer commands huge respect. He began making wine in New Zealand nearly two decades ago, before NZ wines achieved the elevated status that they now enjoy. His CV includes stints at Mission Vineyard (Hawkes Bay), Giesen’s Canterbury vineyard, Rippon at Wanaka in Central Otago and vintages in Oregon and Burgundy.
Vintage 1998 was the first for Rudi & partner Clothilde Chauvet’s Quartz Reef label. The wine is aptly named – New Zealand’s largest quartz deposit lies beneath the vines at Bendigo Station.
Vintage 2014 Bendigo Single Vineyard (white label) Pinot: Wonderful pinot energy here - plum fruits with characteristic gritty/grainy nicely chewy tannins. Something new each time you sniff and sip; lots to ponder. Keep if you can, otherwise plenty of air.
Vintage 2013 Bendigo Estate (black label) Pinot: Raw power and tremendous energy, even with four years in the bottle. It's a prodigy... that will become a divine pinot with soul, in another 8 years.
