They may be small in volume, but quality-wise, Tasmania's rare shiraz wines exist in the upper echelon. As they started to show up more and more at the Tasmanian Wine Show, Huon Hooke stated that shiraz, or syrah as it sometimes labelled, was now most definitely 'Tasmania's other red'. The number of vineyard sites growing shiraz can be counted on the fingers of two hands. Originally these were restricted to warmer sites in the Tamar and Coal River Valleys, with old vine material, but now we are seeing top wines from the East Coast and even D'Entrecasteaux Channel.
Style-wise they are briary, yet luscious, with fine structures and an absence of excessive alcohols. Delicious in their youth, where the perfume is a very seductive element, they also age with grace.
