Shiraz - Tasmanian Shiraz

$39.00 - $155.00

Tasmania's second red wine grape is shaping up to be shiraz, but think Cornas, rather than Barossa, as the style measure. Nick Glaetzer got the ball rolling with a Jimmy Watson Trophy win for his 2010 Mon Pere Shiraz (made from Tamar and Coal V fruit), which became an instant house-hold name among wine lovers nationally.

Plantings though are small and wines and vintages come and go fairly quickly. These are currently available:

  • 2016 Mewstone Syrah (D'Entrecasteaux): Mewstone is Australia's most southern 'shiraz' producer. Dark raspberry, flesh and fine, fine tannins. Spice too but the bell-like fruit has its day. So juicy, so silky, so intense, so, so delicious. And some grunt to give it gravitas.
  • 2016 Riversdale Syrah (Coal V): GOLD MEDAL 2017 Tas Wine Show. Balanced and harmonious. Pretty bouquet and loads of sweet and peppery spices, supple with fine tannins. Campbell Mattinson WINEFRONT: 'It’s satiny and seamless but nutty and peppery too. It’s just a delicious style of red wine. Savoury and lighter but not too much of either, and complemented by sweet cherries. It’s succulent. It flows beautifully. The finish has shape and tether and could also, possibly, be described as crisp. Positives abound.'
  • 2013 Moorilla Muse Syrah (Tamar): From Moorilla's Tamar Valley site St Matthias. The Tamar produces top shiraz in good vintages, although in tiny quantity. Luscious, supple, berry-fruited wine with impeccable structure. Fine, fine backbone.
  • 2013 Waterton Shiraz (Tamar): Very juicy and easy, quite perfumed in a northern Rhone kinda way. Fine tannins add good grip and chewiness but the overall impression is of silky vibrant fruit.

We specialise in the best of premium pinot noir as grown so beautifully in the cool climes of Tasmania, New Zealand and southern parts of the big Australian continent. Our love for pinot extends to its sibling styles pinot gris and grigio and fizzy cousins sparkling wine and Champagne, even when they don’t contain pinot noir. That’s not to say we’ve become too exclusive - we also stock an interesting range of delicious wines for those (rare) times when you’re not drinking pinot…
