Bell Hill Pinot Noirs
Winery : Bell Hill
Owners Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuisen returned from travels in Europe and were drawn to the Weka Pass area of north Canterbury which had not previously been planted to grapes. They established the vineyard on the limestone rich soils in 1997
2016 Old Weka Pass Road Pinot Noir: The labels on the Old Weka Pass Road are a reference to the ancient Maori drawings found in a nearby rock overhang. 'A six barrel blend of some of the younger fruit from the vineyard, creating a more immediately accessible style. 'Openly fruited with some shyness at first that develops with air, an early release for this wine but you will be rewarded by the delicacy of fruit on the palate giving way to fine-boned tannins with a lovely linear line running through the fruit.'
2015 Bell Hill Pinot Noir: This is a barrel selection from the whole vineyard. 100% de-stemmed, 100% new oak. Built for age-worthiness, these wines come into their own with at least 6 years bottle age. Screw cap. 'Hints of lifted spice and dark fruit, a touch of liquorice, briar and spice aromatics with lifted bright red fruit tones. On the palate it shows a deep concentration of fruit, elegance and energy with seamless tannin structures giving long length of flavour.'
