2018 Young Guns of Wine: Jonny Hughes 'Best New Act'

Mewstone Wines is a venture between Jonny Hughes (ex Moorilla) and his brother Matt. The vineyard comprises 3ha at Flowerpot in Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is named after the island of Mewstone, a small, rugged outcrop off Tasmania's south coast, not far from the Maatsuyker group.

Fabulous dark magenta in the glass, so alluring. Mocha, coffee and plum on the nose with finer fragrances of red carnation and violet. Briary fruit depth of flavour with cleansing dry and savoury tannins.

Winemaker notes: ' Harvested on the 15th May, the 2017 was an exercise in patience. It was natural fermented with 8% whole bunch in one of our trusty milk vats. Pressed after 21 days directly to oak, 40% new, and left to mature for 9 months before bottling in late summer.'
