New Zealand's Central Otago region comprises several sub-regions, all of which bestow particular style characteristics in the wines. Gibbston is noted for plummy flavours and structure; the wines of Cromwell basin and Wanaka are sweetly scented and openly textured; Bannockburn pinots show exceptional harmony and balance; Alexandra at 46S is famous for brilliant aromatics; and Bendigo with its elevated barren slopes, produces powerful pinots of depth.
2017 Two Degrees Pinot Noir: Typically, of the pinots from Wanaka and Clutha, the bouquet is immediately appealing with, sweetly perfumed fruit in the ripe dark raspberry and cherry spectrum. Two Degrees Pinot shows excellent clarity of fruit and is always divinely silky in the mouth. Sarah-Kate Dineen of Maude makes the wine.
2016 Quartz Reef Pinot Noir: Biodynamic producer in Bendigo region. Quartz Reef Pinots are powerful and savoury wines with great longevity. Intense cherry and berry aromas. Rich on the palate with dark cherry, subtle floral and herbaceous notes. Michael Cooper 5 stars, 'Classic Status'.
2017 Two Paddocks Pinot Noir: Organic producer with sites in Gibbston, Alexandra (two sites) and Bannockburn. This is a barrel selection from all four vineyards, 25% whole bunch, old and new oak for 10 months. Dark briary fruits on the nose. Sweet fruit is lively in the mouth, chalky tannins are ultra fine. Savoury at the last. Ages very well.
2017 Charteris Pinot Noir: From the upper slopes of Bannockburn region. Brilliant colour, aromas of sweet cherry and szechuan pepper smoke. Cola, earthy and plush sweet red fruits in the mouth. 36% whole bunch, no filtering.
2015 Rua by Akarua Pinot Noir: Bannockburn producer. GOLD MEDAL, 95 POINTS at the 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards. 'A bouquet loaded with ripe, fresh red berry fruit aromas - raspberry, cherry, plum; mild oak and dry stone material add depth. On the palate - lots of energy, lots of fruit, lots of pinosity; flavours reflect the bouquet with red berry fruits and red apple skin, mild oak, fine to moderate tannins and plenty of acidity. Balanced, fresh, oozing personality with a fairly lengthy finish.' MS Cameron Douglas
2016 Chard Farm Mata-Au Pinot Noir: Chard Farm, although based in a most spectacular Gibbston location, uses estate-grown Lowburn/Parkburn fruit from the Cromwell Basin for Mata-Au Pinot. This area produces elegant, softly structured pinot in contrast to the concentration and firm backbone of Gibbston. This is a finely-stated Central Otago pinot - medium-weight, spicy, textured, savoury.
