ITALY - Essential Reds Mixed DOZEN

Four different styles and varieties, four different regions: we travel from the land of truffles, Piedmont, east to the Veneto, duck into Tuscany and then south to 'explosive' Sicily. These wines were particular favourites at our recent Italian wines tasting.
  • Bricco Maiolica Barbera d'Alba (Piedmont): After sangiovese, barbera is the most widely grown grape in Italy. The Diano d'Alba region, and the Maiolica hill, from whence this Barbera hails, is one of the premium spots for the variety. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, it is a fragrant, supple and velvety wine. There's a very pretty bouquet, with almonds and spice,and it's juicy in the mouth but also has a complementary and appealing gentle savouriness. A very nice introduction to Italian wines for die-hard pinot drinkers.
  • Viviani Valpolicella Classico (Veneto): Medium bodied, juicy blend of corvina, rondinella and molinara. Ruby red colour and a delicate and distinctive cherry/fruity bouquet with Christmas cake spices. Dry with a pleasant bitterness, soft, velvety and harmonious. Very versatile with food - even char-grilled octopus.
  • Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico (Tuscany): Gallo Nero Chianti. Top selling Chianti from our Italian wine tasting, this is a superb example of the style. Chocolatey and rich, with briary fruit and softly gripping tannins. Magnificent with a good lasagne or any beef braise. Castello di Querceto is located in the north-east of Chianti in the commune of Greve in Chianti. Fruit for this Chianti is sourced from the Colline del Valdarno, part of the Chianti 'mountain' range. This is the flagship wine of the highly-rated Castello di Querceto range. Seriously complex and satisfying Chianti, at once fruity and floral but also spice and leather. An infinite array of aromas and flavours are revealed as the wine breathes in the glass.
  • Fondo Antico Nero d'Avola (Sicily): Gorgeously fruity and perfumed in this vintage - you'd swear that they were growing pinot in Sicily. Abundant cherry/raspberry fruit mingling with aromatic white pepper. Amazingly smooth yet lively and very engaging, in part due to the absence of oak. Nero d'avola is one of the finest indigenous red grapes of Sicily and has a capacity to age. Made to drink young (like this one) it has an appealing fruitiness which Aussie drinkers find delicious.The elevation of vineyards tempers Sicily's naturally warmer climate.
