ITALY - Italian White Wines
Winery : various
St Michael Eppan 2018 Chardonnay: In 1907 in South Tyrol, three hundred and forty winemaking families came together under the St Michael-Eppan label, which has continued to produce some of Italy's most outstanding wines. Beautifully silky chardonnay with fine fragrance. Versatile food match.
Villa Sparina 2017 Gavi de Gavi Piedmont DOCG: The grape is cortese - citrus, minerals, viscosity. The signature food partner is fish; Gavi was originally produced to supply the fish restaurants of Genoa. It looks a treat too - unique bottle shop modelled on a C18th one found on the estate.
Casa d'Ambra 2017 Frassitelli: From the island of Ischia, a tiny outcrop in the Bay of Naples. Biancolello is the grape - straw-coloured, fragrant with flowers, almonds. Casa d'Ambra represents 'heroic viticulture' (Jancis Robinson) making use of a monorail to harvest grapes at 600m on the slopes of Monte Epomeo.
Benanti 2017 Etna Bianco: One of Sicily's top producers, Benanti's fabulous sites are located high up on the eastern and southern volcanic slopes of Mt Etna. Minerality is assured in this stylish version of indigenous grape carricante. Honey too with lemon curd. Dry.
Massaretti 2015 Riviera Ligure di Ponente Pigato: From Liguria. Pigato (aka vermentino) is derived from the local dialect word for spotted, alluding to the freckled appearance of the grapes at harvest. Aromatic variety with honeysuckle and nuts. Rich but dry with cleansing finish.
