Mewstone Wines is a venture between Jonny Hughes (ex Moorilla) and his brother Matt. The vineyard comprises 3ha at Flowerpot in Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is named after the island of Mewstone, a small, rugged outcrop off Tasmania's south coast, not far from the Maatsuyker group. Hughes & Hughes is the drink now, sometimes 'experimental' range.
2018/9 Hughes & Hughes Riesling: Honeysuckle on the nose with sweet citrus fruits. Off dry to dry with a delicious sensation of silky ripeness. The acid is just there for refreshment, the bright fruit dominates all. Barrel ferment.
2017 Mewstone Sauvignon Blanc: Cast aside your prejudices... sauvignon blanc is a noble variety and Jonny Hughes shows us just why that is so. Pale old gold in colour, smoky minerally and honey aromas abound. The real revelation comes when the wine glides lusciously across the palate - caramel, cumquat, saltiness, utter deliciousness.
2016 Mewstone Chardonnay: A tighter, leaner beast than the 2016 Chardonnay, this incarnation has edge, vivacity and fruit intensity. Fifty percent new oak enhances the white lily perfume and gives texture. Despite Hughes describing the wine as a more 'constrained' expression of chardonnay, the flavours are incredibly long and lip-smacking. Brilliance would be 4-5 years in the cellar.
