SPAIN - Telmo Rodriguez 2015 Basa Blanco
Winery : Telmo Rodriguez
Telmo Rodriguez' Basa Blanco is produced from 40 year old verdejo vines (pronounced 'verdekkho') at 750 metres altitude, and cropped at about 1kg/vine. This is an aromatic wine with tantalising mixture of flowers and lime citrus as well as richer nuttiness. It's full flavoured with a wonderful texture, and inherent freshness. 13% alcohol, screw cap.
Importer Scott Wasley notes what a great all-rounder it is - '... it's great asset is all-natural acidity (nothing out of a bag), so it doesn't get cloying, metallic or soapy … no matter how many bottles are gone through!'
Rueda in NW Spain is noted primarily for its white wines. Verdejo, according to The Jancis Tome, was introduced to Rueda by the Mozarabs before Moorish rule. DNA parentage analysis suggests that godello (from Galicia) is a sibling variety. Verdejo is Spain's 5th most planted white variety.
