USA - Peay Vineyards California Pinot Noirs
Winery : Peay
Peay is based in California's Sonoma Coast, the Estate vineyard perched on a fog-enshrouded hilltop above a river gorge, four miles from the Pacific Ocean. The uplifted seabed lies in the chilly and windy inversion layer. Grapes are farmed using organic practices.
Top US scribe Antonio Galloni gives evocative background to the wines - 'Peay is in the middle of nowhere. Literally. Reaching the sprawling, rugged estate is an adventure in and of itself. A collection of hillside sites with multiple exposures set within undeveloped forest, Peay is one of the most marginal sites for growing grapes, even within the context of the Sonoma Coast... The wines though, are usually terrific, and often magnificent'
Peay Vineyards 2016 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir: Vineyard notes: 'The bright nose is a knock-out featuring spice-laden ginger bread and tobacco leaf aromas accenting a raspberry and cherry core of fruit. There is real depth on the palate without fat and the round mouthfeel on the mid palate is held in check by light tannins that soften with air.'
Peay Vineyards 2015 Ama Estate Pinot Noir: '...comes across as quite understated, especially within the context of the year. Bright red cherry, blood orange, mint and sweet spices give the wine its beguiling aromatics. Delicate and understated on the palate and also relative to other vintages the 2015 looks like it will drink well with minimal cellaring.' ANTONIO GALLONI
