Adelaide Hills based Sam Scott is one of the best young winemakers in the country. Not only is he skilled, he has a curious mind and revels in trying new things.

With its fragrance and clean silkiness, Scott Fiano from Adelaide Hills has been one of our most popular white wines especially for the warmer months. Never mind that few have heard of Italian variety Fiano, once they try, they're inevitably smitten.

For his new project La Prova (Italian for 'the trial' or 'experiment') Sam Scott has sourced other emerging Australian-grown Italian varieties and has made a fabulously delicious range  - a Pinot Grigio that is truly worthy of its name, slurpable Sangiovese, mysterious Aglianico (pronounced all-yan-icko) and an exquisitely delicate and dry aglianico rose.

'No limits, no pre-conceived ideas, our simple mandate is for varietal expression, faithfulness to style, great value and enjoyment.'

  • La Prova Rosato $23: Palely pretty in the glass. Turkish delight on the nose, whiff of raspberry too. Soft and fruity but dry, almost like drinking rose petals. Quite exquisite, ultra refreshing for a warm day with or without food.
  • La Prova Pinot Grigio $23: So true to its (Italian) name. This is brilliant, vivacious pinot grigio at its crisp, food-friendly best. Lovely fragrance of pear, with some citrus, and lip-smackingly juicy in the mouth.
  • La Prova Sangiovese $23: 'My new favourite quaffer,' said a happy customer. This is juicy, slurpy, unwooded sangiovese at its best. Plenty of briary fruit, really fills the mouth with typical savoury tannins to finish.
  • La Prova Aglianico $23: Aglianico hails from southern Basilicata. It is often called the 'Barolo of the south' due to its mix of floral and earthy characteristics - 'tar and roses'. Sam Scott's La Prova has less of the meatiness and plenty of mulberry/dark cherry fruit on the nose and excellent fine dry, slightly gritty tannins on the finish.

Wines available individually or as a La Prova Mixed Dozen $235 (3 of each), which works out at a party-friendly $19.58ea.
