Kooyong Estate 2010 Single Site Pinot Noirs
Winery : Kooyong Estate
Mornington, Victoria -
As a broad observation 2010 produced some sensational wines in Mornington, none more so than the Kooyongs. Also broadly speaking, it is clear that while each of the Kooyong single site Pinots retains its underlying characteristics (that were evident on their initial release back in 2003), Sandro Mosele has clearly refined the styles over the years: ergo Ferrous is no longer quite so brutish, Meres is not such a sweet girly thing and Haven is a much more than simply an Estate lookalike.
- 2010 Kooyong Estate Meres Pinot Noir SPECIAL $69: Michele's notes: Rose, red cherry and smokiness, evolving bouquet. Yes, it still has beguiling and quite ethereal scents but there is something a little more focused and quite nervy at this youthful stage. One suspects that true beauty will emerge with age... Alive and juicy in the mouth, that nerviness comes through, excellent savoury touches. Bright acid, making it the most refreshing of the three sites at this stage. Campbell Mattinson 95+ points - '...Meaty, spicy, gamey, reductive – there’s nothing sweet-fruited and fleshy about this. Smoky herbs too. Name a savoury element and it’s likely to be here. Blackberries and black cherries and strings of sappy, stalky tannin. Cellaring – or at the least, decanting – is essential....'
- 2010 Kooyong Estate Ferrous Pinot Noir SPECIAL $69: Michele's notes: Spirited and intense aromas with stone and dried red fruits. In the mouth, earthiness and intense small berry fruits with chewy skin tannins, powerfully firm but smooth. Opens up more and more with each sip. Wow. Campbell Mattinson 95 points - 'This is a very strong release of Ferrous pinot noir. Grown on a patch of Kooyong vineyard and wild fermented in large oak. Iron and earth. A sense of calm, cold authority. Fruit is dark berried and grippy. Herbs and spices and no lack of them....'
- 2010 Kooyong Estate Haven Pinot Noir $72: Michele's notes: Earthy, animal, mushroom... very enticing and lively bouquet with rich curranty fruits matching the more savoury/minerally elements. Intense and surprisingly plush in the mouth, concentrated, balanced and round. Very satisfying. SOLD OUT
