Philippa Farr 2013 Mornington Pinot Noir
Winery : Philippa Farr
Philippa Farr far grew up in Bannockburn, Victoria, on the famous wine family's sheep and vineyard property. Her early wine career combined study and vintage experience; then followed a farming career, which is how she came to Gippsland. The passion for wine was not to be denied and after vintages at Bouzeron, Domaine Dujac and By Farr (among others) she took the opportunity to make the stylish 2012 Philippa Farr Gippsland Pinot Noir from close-planted vines at Leongatha.
She's backed that up with two wines from the excellent Victorian 2013 vintage - another from Gippsland and the one featured here, 2013 Philippa Farr Mornington Pinot Noir.
Philippa Farr notes: 'From the Mornington Peninsula, down on the lower flats, this maritime climate, single vineyard Pinot Noir is bright and crisp. A wild ferment was allowed to take hold, with 30% whole bunch, (therefore the need to get in), then developed in 25% new French oak for 15 months. Several rackings meant no filtration was needed.'
Huon Hooke 94 points: 'Lovely perfumes include rose-petal scents and spices; the oak is understated. Light- to medium-bodied and softly textured on the palate, it has intensity as well as gentleness at the same time. A thoroughly charming Pinot.' Gourmet Traveller WINE April/May 2015
