Chardonnay - Felton Road Chardonnays
Winery : Felton Road
The quality of Felton Road's Chardonnay leaves us wondering why this variety is spurned by the majority of Central Otago producers. Felton Road Chardonnays are always rather exotic in style - tangy lime and guava with a lively yet luxurious palate - and superb structure which gives them great age-ability.
'17 Felton Road Block 2 Chardonnay: Winery notes 'A lifted and bright nose of white peach and alluring crisp tropical fruit, discretely integrated with subtle baking spice and wet stone. Block 2’s 25 year old vines and deep schist gravel soils are plainly evident in the distinct minerality. Considerable breadth across the mid-palate and bright acidity gives great poise and length. The winemaking is virtually invisible, allowing great clarity and detail of the site. With 16 months in barrel, no new oak, no fining, no filtering: this is just Block 2 in its simplest and most refined form.'
'17 Felton Road Block 6 Chardonnay: Winery notes 'Aromas of stonefruit and honeysuckle are immediately apparent. Our hands-off and transparent winemaking reveals the markers of Block 6 to take centre stage. This higher elevation and north-facing slope results in riper flavours with more opulence and breadth compared to the more mineral infused and tighter Block 2. A complexing chalkiness adds intrigue and mouthfeel to the finish which is supported by a fine, almost salty acidity.'
